Kushite burial practices
15" × 13.5" Ink on paper
This work represents some unique features of the Kushite burial
traditions. One of these is the funerary tradition in which the
deceased is laid on a special bed (locally known as Angaraib);
this tradition continues in Sudan today. A second feature of Kushite
mortuary practices are traditional leopard skin robes wore by the
priests. A third burial tradition is placing the grave goods put
by the family to accompany the deceased relative in the afterlife.
The grave goods included daily life materials, food stuffs preserved
in ceramics, cosmetic kohol pots, jewelry, and ivory game boards.
Also, distinguished grave items include Canopic jars, which were
used in the mummification process. Finally a flute player traditionally
accompanied the funeral procession.
